Sierra Pacific girls win school's first state title

The Sierra Pacific girls won the Division V CIF State Championship Saturday in Sacramento, defeating Lowell 52-26.

For the second year in a row, a Central Valley girls basketball team won a state title. Saturday at Sacramento's Golden 1 Center - in front of a sizable crowd of fans wearing green and gold - Sierra Pacific captured the Division V crown by doubling up Lowell of San Francisco, 52-26. It was the Golden Bears' first state title in any sport.

Sierra Pacific jumped out to a big lead in the first half by going inside to sophomore Alana Roberts early and often. Roberts finished with 20 points on 10 of 14 shooting, and also added 12 rebounds. Fellow sophomore Celeste Lewis scored 12 points, to go with eight rebounds, four assists and five steals.

The Golden Bears are now the second Hanford school to win a girls basketball state title, joining the Bullpups' 2001 team.
