Fresno State narrows coaching search

Fresno State is expected to hire a new men's basketball coach by the end of next week, and is honing in on five candidates.

Fresno State is getting closer to naming its next men's basketball head coach. Sources tell FOX26 the school has narrowed its list to five, and unless something major changes, a new coach should be introduced by the end of next week.

The current finalists are, in no particular order: Byron Jones, the Bulldogs' current interim head coach; Justin Hutson, current associate head coach at San Diego State; David Grace, a UCLA assistant since 2013; Stan Johnson, current associate head coach at Marquette; and Russell Turner, head coach at UC Irvine the last eight seasons.

Sources also tell FOX26 former Fresno State great Melvin Ely is expected to be an assistant on the coaching staff, regardless of who the head coach is.
