COS runner Alyssa Block captures cross country state title

COS sophomore Alyssa Block won the women's individual title Saturday at the junior college state cross country championships.

After finishing second in the 2016 junior college state cross country meet as a freshman, COS star runner Alyssa Block was determined to do one better as a sophomore. She did. The Exeter alum finished in 17:43 Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno, a time that was 22 seconds faster than her time the year prior, and 29 seconds faster than the 2nd place finisher.

"Every year since last year I've been thinking about that," said Block. "Like, I was so close - 'don't let it slip through your fingers this year.' So, I went after it today. I definitely wanted to get out there and just empty the tank. I didn't want to walk away with any regrets. So, I didn't. I'm really excited."

Making Block's story even better, she didn't even start running competitively until her senior year in high school. Block was a soccer player, but her coach suggested she hit the track instead. It's worked out. Block also won the state title in the 1500 meters during track & field season earlier this year.
