FNR campus visit: Clovis West vs. Central

Central High School Academic Decathlon

Valley high school football is back on the air Friday night on our sister station, The CW59!

It's all part of the Les Schwab Tires Friday Night Rivals presented by Lithia Subaru.

This week's matchup between the Clovis West Golden Eagles and the Central Grizzlies.

FOX26 Sports Reporter Nick King visited both schools before the big game on Friday.

Clovis West's marching band might be the best in the Valley.

The Golden Eagles just won a regional competition in San Jose will travel all the way to Indianapolis for Nationals later this year.

This is about much more than winning though."We just commit to excellence. And I really believe that committing to excellence in music and committing to excellence in character really just sets us apart," said Clovis West senior Emma Boone.

Clovis West senior Faiaz Rahman said, "He wants us to learn the ethics of hard work and that pays off. He wants us to learn the ethics of commitment, how that will pay off. And how, if you want to achieve a goal in your life, you have to do that in increments. And you have to learn that relentless mindset you have to have, you can apply in any part of your life."

C-Dub is also the number one seed in playoffs for both girls golf and girls tennis, and they boast the returning Valley Champion on the courts, Janie Ellis, who's still just a junior. "We're just a really close team. It's been a really great season so far, so I'm super excited for matter what happens, still, we've had a blast," said Ellis.

At Central there is a rising power in the academic decathlon world, Aca Deca, as the kids call it, naturally tests the brain in a variety of ways. There are game show type quizzes, written tests, one-on-one interviews, impromptu speeches on a topic you learned about 60 seconds earlier.

Central junior Rebecca Smith said, "It's a really good experience. You get to learn a lot. And you get exposed to all kinds of history and economics and science..."

Last year, the Grizzlies finished second in fresno Country's second division.

Junior Katarina Kezirian said, "They've just helped me in a lot of problems I've had in my life. And it's just that bond that we've created while maintaining an academic excellence, has really helped. I just feel like I'm less ignorant."

If you can't make it to the game, make sure you watch it at 7:00 p.m. Friday, October 28th on The CW59.

If you do make it to the game, upload your photos and videos and we might use them on the FOX26 10 o'clock News!
