BERKELEY, Calif. (KMPH) - The U.S. Geological Survey reported a magnitude 4.4 earthquake in Berkeley early Thursday morning.

The quake struck around 2:37 a.m. People in the San Francisco Bay area reported feeling the jolt, but it was only strong enough to knock some picture frames off walls. Some reported they were shaken out of bed.

The USGS website says people reported feeling the quake 40 miles (64 kilometers) south in San Jose.

The earthquake's epicenter was in the area of the Hayward fault, which experts say could produce a magnitude 7.0 or greater earthquake under heavily populated regions in the Bay area.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage Thursday morning.
