The Porterville Police Department says a teen is going to survive after he stabbed himself while at school.

On Thursday afternoon, officers responded to Granite Hills High School regarding a possible student who had been stabbed. The school went on lockdown and officers began to search the campus for the student. That's when officers found a 16-year-old boy suffering from a single stab wound to his stomach. Officers quickly determined it was self-inflicted and the campus was safe and secure.

The student was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries and will be held pending further evaluation by Tulare County mental health.

Police did recover a knife at the school and a report will be submitted to the Tulare County Probation Department for review of charges.

The case remains under investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact Corporal Dominguez at 559-782-7400.
