A man was bitten on the foot by a lion after he broke into the enclosure, Fresno police say.

It happened Wednesday around 11:15 p.m. at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo.

According to Fresno Police, 38-year-old Julio Mendez somehow made his way into the lion exhibit and started to climb the netting surrounding the enclosure. As he climbed the netting, police say one of the lions jumped up and bit his left big toe.

Police say Mendez said he was being chased by a man and ran through the zoo to get away.

Mendez was removed from the area. He was arrested and cited for trespassing and taken to the hospital for treatment.
