More than 2,700 personnel battling the Ferguson Fire

The wildfire known as the Ferguson Fire burning in Mariposa County continues to grow.

More resources have been sent to the fire, which has grown to 22,892 acres or 36 square miles.

The fire started last Friday evening in the "Savage Trading Post" area but the cause is still not known.

As of Friday morning, the fire is only 7 percent contained and there are now 2,711 personnel working on the fire or working in a support role.

Fighting the fire is slow and difficult due to the hot summer temperatures and very dry, steep terrain.

Also making it difficult is limited visibility because of thick smoke causing and inversion layer, which limits the use of aircraft to fight the fire.

As of Friday, no structures have been damaged or destroyed by the Ferguson Fire.

Thankfully, there have also been no civilian injuries or casualties.

Sadly, one firefighter lost his life battling the Ferguson Fire.

Cal Fire heavy fire equipment operator Braden Varney died clearing brush with his bulldozer last Friday night.

A memorial will be held for Varney on Monday at the The House Modesto, 1601 Coffee road in Modesto.
