Miss Fresno County chasing dream and battling cancer

Miss Fresno County, Andrea Andrade.

The journey to become the next Miss California USA takes a lot of work. Miss Fresno County, Andrea Andrade says she’s now taking her chances of fulfilling this lifelong dream.

“I’ve wanted this since I was a little girl. Now that I am able to do it. I think it is the perfect timing for me," said Andrade.

Not only is she fighting for the crown but she is battling stage three colon cancer. The 27-year-old says she was diagnosed in March.

“I am not able to work out as much as the other girls. I am not able to diet that way because I have to maintain my health to be very stable,” said Andrade.

Andrea says life for her now is a balance between doctors appointments and training for the pageant.

"They've had girls compete with my condition before but they have been survivors," said Andrade.

But Andrea is still fighting her condition. That's why she says on stage at the competition she'll have her chemo machine with her.

"My dress was adjusted to it. We put pockets and everything," said Andrade.

Even so, Andrea says it's not cancer she'll be thinking about at the pageant. But her dream to wear the crown as Fresno County's next Miss California USA.

"I haven't let it push me down. I think I have been very optimistic this entire time ever since I found out. I want people not to define me with my cancer. That is the last thing I want," said Andrade.

Andrea isn’t taking any chances. She says there will be doctors and an ambulance on standby. The pageant starts December first in Long Beach.
