A Tulare County Judge sentenced a man to 25 years to life in prison Thursday for the murder and assault of three-year-old Jimmy Horton.

Trevor Jim Bishop, 34, was convicted by a jury earlier this year of one count of second-degree murder and one felony count of assault on a child causing death.

Court documents say Bishop was taking care of his girlfriend's children, Jimmy, 3 and a female toddler back in March of 2013.

On that day, Bishop took Jimmy to Kaweah Delta Urgent Care because he was reportedly found unconscious in his bedroom.

After further investigation, Doctors discovered that Jimmy had severe bruising to his torso and genitals.

During the trial, Doctors testified Jimmy sustained "non-accidental" blunt force trauma to the head and suffered an acute subdural hematoma, severe brain swelling and a mid-line shift of the brain stem.

Jimmy never regained consciousness and remained in a vegetative state. According to court documents, Jimmy's father took care of him until he passed away 11 months later.
