Man dies after being accidentally shot by former roommate in Madera, Police say

MADERA, Calif (FOX 26) — A man is dead in Madera after Madera Police say he was accidentally shot.

According to MPD, they were dispatched to the 300 block of Washington Court Wednesday evening around 7:10.

MPD says the call was regarding a man who they say had been accidentally shot.

Police say they determined that a woman who was the victim's former roommate identified as 51-year-old Maria Moraleswas manipulating the firearm in the backyard of a residence when she negligently and accidentally discharged it, striking the victim.

Police say the victim a 21-year-old man was rushed to a local hospital but died as a result of his injuries.

MPD says that this was an isolated incident, was not gang related nor is there any threat to the public.

MPD says Moraleswas subsequently arrested for negligent discharge of a firearm and manslaughter and booked into Madera County Jail.
