Man arrested for drunk driving following multi-car crash in Fresno, police say

A 35-year-old man was arrested for drunk driving following a crash in Fresno, police say.

A 35-year-old man is now facing felony DUI and hit-and-run charges after a series of crashes Monday morning.

It happened around 10:30 a.m.

Emma Ornelas and Gricelda Armenta had been waiting at a red light at Shaw and First when they saw a black Mercedes Benz coming their way.

"We were stopped at the red light. We heard a car," they said. "We turned and saw him coming towards us. The car was already wrecked."

According to Fresno Police, Moaz Gill had already hit one car at First and Gettysburg, but kept driving northbound.

When he reached Shaw, police say Gill hit a light pole and crashed into three other cars, including the one carrying Ornelas and Armenta.

"I was like, 'Why is he not stopping?'" Armenta said. "'He's gonna hit us now, he's not stopping!'"

Two of the drivers whose cars were hit were taken by ambulance to an area hospital.

A third driver was taken by family members to a hospital to get checked out, after she complained about pain.

Gill was arrested at the scene and police observed behavior that led them to believe he was drunk.

"We're fortunate we have taken him into custody and he won't be driving any longer," said Lt. Mark Hudson with Fresno Police. "It's almost 10:30 in the morning. This person is extremely drunk... This could have been even worse."

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more drunk drivers nationwide are hitting the road in the daytime-- with deadly results.

The number of DUI drivers involved in fatal crashes rose from 7 percent to 8 percent from 2008 to 2017-- translating to more than 300 drivers.
