A Madera County deputy was trying to put out a small brush fire when a piece of fire debris hit him in the face.
It happened around 5:30 a.m. Friday along Highway 41, south of 406.
According to CalFire, the deputy saw the brush fire on the side of the highway and attempted to put it out with a shovel. At first, crews were investigating the case as an explosion.
The Madera County Sheriff's Office sent out a press release stating the cause of the deputy's injury was a piece of debris that hit him in the face.
The fire burn about a half acre.
The deputy was taken to the hospital and released to return to full duty.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
