Los Banos woman followed, photographed by stranger in grocery store
LOS BANOS, Calif. (FOX26) —
A woman in Los Banos says she is terrified after being followed and photographed by a stranger in a grocery store.
Who is this woman, and why is she following me?” said Anna Chavez.
Chavez was going through Santa Fe Market, picking out groceries as normal with her two year old son.
When she got to the checkout counter, someone pointed out something Chavez hadn’t noticed.
“The woman then asks me, ‘Do you know who that woman is?’ and I said no. She said ,‘Well she’s been taking pictures of you and your son,’” explained Chavez.
Security footage shows a woman following Chavez throughout the entire store, taking pictures and video of her and her baby the whole time.
At some points, you can clearly see the woman holding her phone up.
“People, they judge and they say, well why didn’t you confront the woman? People have to realize, I have a toddler with me,” said Chavez.
That was it – Chavez rushed out to her car and the woman eventually left the store, empty-handed. But not knowing what the woman was doing or why she was doing it is still haunting Chavez.
“I feel violated. I couldn’t sleep last night. I have my blinds closed because she could be outside spying. You just don’t know,” said Chavez. “I don’t want to overreact, but I have to as a mother. I have to react this way. And I want to get to the word out because any other woman could be a victim. And like I said, this could have been worse.”
Chavez reached out to police to get the security footage, but the problem is, what this woman did is not a crime. It’s legal to take pictures of people in a public place, so there isn’t much law enforcement can do.
“It’s hard feeling safe when you don’t have answers. When it’s still under investigation, and there’s somebody still out there that could potentially still be watching you,” said Chavez.
Chavez is hoping that somebody sees this news story or sees her Facebook post and recognizes the woman who was following her so that they can contact police and figure out what was going on.
