News of Tuesday's shooting rampage in Central Fresno was tough to miss.

"A girl at my work told me, ‘Lisa, today there was another shooting. I was like, not again, not again,’" Lisa Gassett said Wednesday morning.

Gassett received even more updates from friends that afternoon, not realizing her loved one was among the victims.

A call she received hours later, left her shattered.

"I got a call from my children's grandma,” Gassett said. “She said, 'Call me Lisa. It's an emergency.’ I just knew…. And I knew. It just tore my heart apart."

Mark Gassett was the father of her two sons, ages 9 and 14.

They last saw him Easter.

They say he was fun and caring.

Even, goofy.

But, he ran into tough times and was picking up groceries at Catholic Charities on Tuesday just before he was shot and killed.

Gassett says her oldest son understands what's happening.

The younger, just knows, someone tried to help his daddy.

“In my heart I always believe that you have to forgive people and move on. But it’s hard when you take someone away from your babies. Especially a father to my babies," Gassett said.

The family has set up a GoFundMe account to raise money for his funeral expenses.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer has been in contact with Congressman Jim Costa’s office about securing funds to cover funeral expenses for all of the shooting rampage’s victims.

If that happens, Gassett says any money raised will go to help her boys, and create a college fund.
