Fresno Police say an officer shot and killed a man Friday while investigating a stabbing.

This happened near the intersection of Townsend Avenue and Bailey Avenue.

Fresno Police say they were called out to help after an argument between two brothers ended with one of them getting stabbed with a six-inch steak knife.

Police say the man, identified as 46-year-old Jason Rodriguez had been hallucinating before the stabbing.

"There was a funeral for the grandfather several days ago, and the subject who had the knife had come to town with other family for that funeral," explained Deputy Chief Pat Farmer with the Fresno Police Department.

Deputy Chief Pat Farmer says officers shot the man officers believe stabbed his brother.

"One of the officers that first made contact with the subject with a knife began to engage the subject with dialogue, trying to convince the person to drop the knife."

During that attempt at crisis negotiation, Fresno Police say the younger brother tried to tackle his sibling.

That's when Fresno Police sayRodriguez stabbed him, and ran off.

Officers chased after him, and say he ran back to the house.

"The subject refused to drop the knife, and the crisis intervention officer deployed the less-lethal, striking the subject with the knife approximately four times to no avail," said Deputy Chief Farmer. "The second officer - also a crisis negotiator - attempted to use the taser on the subject to no avail."

Another officer also tried less-lethal methods, too, but the man ran off.

A third officer arrived shortly after, and Fresno Police sayRodriguez started sprinting toward him with the knife.

"That officer began to back-pedal and give commands for the subject to drop the knife and stop advancing on him. The subject refused and came at the officer with the knife, and the officer had little to no choice but to use his side arm."

Fresno Police say that officer fired 4-5 rounds at the man, but did not say how many hit Rodriguez.

He was taken to the hospital, but was pronounced deceased there.

The man who was stabbed was also taken to the hospital, but is expected to be okay.

"It's a tragic event, and the officers did a significant effort to try to get this person to voluntarily drop the knife several times," said Deputy Chief Farmer.

The officers involved will be placed on paid administrative leave.
