Mandatory evacuations ordered for fire near Springville

UPDATED: Thursday, August 31, 2017 10:00 a.m. - A public meeting will be held Thursday at 6 p.m., at the Porterville College Student Center.

Members of California Interagency Incident Management Team 5 and representatives from local agencies and organizations will present information on the current fire situation.

Area Closures:

Mountain Home Demonstration State Forest (CALFIRE) and Balch Park (Tulare County) are closed until the fire is brought under control.

Road Closures:

  • East of Springville, Highway 190 is closed to eastbound traffic at Balch Park Road.
  • Mountain Road 107 (Western Divide Highway) is closed to westbound traffic Fox Road in Ponderosa.

Evacuations listed below remain in effect.

UPDATED: Wednesday, August 30, 2017 9:00 a.m. - The fire surged overnight to an estimated 4,655 acres.

No structures have been damaged and the fires was still a mile away from any structures Wednesday morning.

UPDATED: Tuesday, August 29, 2017 - 9:45 A.M. - Evacuations have been ordered for Camp Nelson.


FRESNO, Calif. -- The fire known as the "Pier Fire" is located in the Tule River Canyon above Springville.

Crews estimate the fire has grown to 500 acres in the Giant Sequoia National Monument in the Sequoia National Forest.

The following communities are under a mandatory evacuation order:

  • Pierpoint Springs
  • Wishon
  • Doyle Springs
  • Alpine
  • Sequoia Crest
  • Cedar Slope
  • Camp Nelson

Ponderosa remains under a voluntary evacuation advisory.

All residents who are evacuating are advised to use east bound Highway 190 to the Western Divide Highway.

An evacuation center has been set up at Porterville College at the Student Conference Center, located at 100 East College Avenue in Porterville.

Firefighters from several agencies were called to fight a fire in Springville early Tuesday morning.

The fire started around 2:30 a.m. near Camp Nelson Tuesday. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) and County Roads shut down Mountain Road 50 and Western Divide Highway, as well as Hwy. 190 at Balch Park.

Firefighters said the fire had grown to about 200 acres by 8:00 a.m.

Cal Fire Tulare, the U.S. Forest Service and several agencies from the Visalia, Tulare and Porterville areas were called in to fight the fire Tuesday morning.

The Tulare Co. Fire Department confirmed evacuations were underway Tuesday. Some in the Camp Nelson area were mandatory, while other areas near Ponderosa were under voluntary evacuation recommendations.
