Grapevine back open after snow closure

UPDATE: Caltrans reported about 3 p.m. that northbound I-5 reopened. All lanes are back open after the morning snow forced the Grapevine’s closure.


UPDATE: Northbound I-5 remains closed at Parker Road in Castaic because of several big rigs blocking the roadway, Caltrans reported about 1:45 p.m. Thursday.


UPDATE: The southbound side of the Grapevine reopened shortly before 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

UPDATE: CHP Sgt. Jeff Mesa told Eyewitness News shortly before noon that they hope to have the freeway back open in about an hour. They’ve been slowly moving out stuck vehicles and hope to give Caltrans access to plow and sand the roadway.


The California Highway Patrol on Thursday morning announced it was closing both directions of Interstate 5 over the Grapevine because of snow, ice and multiple crashes.

Caltrans said southbound I-5 is closed at Grapevine Road, and northbound I-5 is closed at Parker Road in Castaic.

Caltrans said there’s no estimation for when the freeway will reopen.
