Are dating apps to blame? STD'S on the rise in California
Sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise in our state. Three of the big ones reported by the center of disease and control are at an all-time high. Some doctors in Fresno think social media is one of the biggest factors. California ranked number two in the nation for the highest percentage of people with syphilis, 13th for gonorrhea and 14th for chlamydia.
Whether you're looking for a serious relationship or just to hook up. Dating apps are clearly making it easier for us to find potential sex partners. OBGYN Israel Brown says although people have more dating options, no one is talking about the dangers of STD's. "It is a big headache for a lot of challenges in sexually transmission of disease. Most people can contact whoever they want to have sex with. Just clicking and streaming through your phone," said Brown.
STD's like syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia are one the rise in the U.S. Brown says the chances of catching an STD is higher using dating apps. "You find someone in your neighborhood who is prepared to have sexual escaped with you, you connect and you go and have sex. You are not sure what you are getting or giving because no one has been screened," said Brown.
He says it's not uncommon for people to have sex with someone they just met and know nothing about their sexual history. "If you want to date the person, make sure you know the person. Make sure you inquire, how is your sexual health. Any disease I should know? Also share your screening results. we want to be fair and transparent with each other," said Brown.
