Coming to Netflix January 2018

Netflix January.jpg

(KUTV) Netflix is loosing some fantastic titles in January, but there are a handful of old friends returning like "Apollo 13," "Breakfast at Tiffany's," "The Shawshank Redemption" and franchises like Batman, Bring It On, Lethal Weapon and The Godfather. Here are five other titles coming to Netflix in January that caught my eye:

Monsters vs. Aliens

I'm more than a little surprised that "Monsters Vs. Aliens" has a Metascore of 56. I love the B-movie elements as the story pits a giant woman and a team of monsters against an invading alien army. Voice talent includes Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogen, Hugh Laurie and Will Arnett. It's not high art, but it is fun art.

Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

When I find myself talking about "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales," I've come to accept that I'm sending mixed messages. On one hand, the film is my second favorite in the franchise. On the other hand, it really isn't that great of a film as it stretches its action sequences to the point that they lose all sense of thrill or adventure. A tighter edit might have made this romp more enjoyable. The lovely thing about Netflix is that you can dive in, test out the water and stay if you find yourself to be entertained. (Avail. 1/2/18)

The Conjuring

"The Conjuring" is one of the better horror films from the past decade. It is built on an old-school aesthetic that relies less on CGI or jump scares and more on atmosphere, storytelling, solid direction and strong performances from Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson. Director James Wan isn't the most flashy of directors, but when it comes to horror he is certainly one of the best. (Avail. 1/8/18)

Dallas Buyers Club

AIDS in the 1980s was a terrifying thing. I was just a child working his way up to his teens, but I watch a ton of morning news and was aware of many of the issues. Still, I didn't comprehend the incredibly slow FDA process that essentially gave those with the disease no other option than to try and find access to experimental drugs. "The Dallas Buyers Club" is about Ron Woodroof (Matthew McConaughey), a man diagnosedwith AIDS who becomes increasingly frustrated by his lack of treatment options that he begins to explore less-than-legal avenues to get treatment for himself and those in similar situations. (Avail. 1/16/18)

Disney·Pixar Cars 3

I liked 2006's "Cars." It was never going to be my favorite Pixar movie, but I was entertained. The film was a box office success with massive amounts of toy sales. So here we are, a decade later, looking at "Cars 3." I didn't care for "Cars 2" in the least, but the third film in the trilogy is decidedly better than the first sequel, but not quite as good as the original film. Still, if you are looking to entertain younger audiences, you'd be hard pressed to find anything that will hold their attention more than "Cars 3." (Avail. 1/31/18)
