Super speller is Fresno Co. Superintendent's Superstar

Ananya Vinay with Superintendent of Fresno County Schools Jim Yovino

The defending California state elementary spelling bee champion has had an April to remember. Just over a week ago Ananya Vinay won her second consecutive state spelling bee title. Her hard work also earned her the Fresno County Superintendent's Superstar of the month award.

There's hardly a word that Ananya Vinay can't spell. The fifth grader from Fugman Elementary in Clovis Unified wasn't that good of speller in the first grade. But oh how things have changed in a few short years. She has a trophy to show she was the best in 2015. "You need to study a little everyday and then you need to focus on your spelling bee."

Ananya says reading helps her improve her vocabulary and spelling but she never puts her nose in a dictionary. Her mother Anu believes her daughter is quite the competitor. "The best thing for when you are in front of a lot of people you're talking, you're thinking straight when everybody is staring at you because you cannot make a mistake and track your way back."

Just days before Ananya went to Stockton to defend her state title she was honored by Superintendent of Fresno County Schools Jim Yovino. She is his Superstar for April. "Well I was really happy and before I hadn't heard of the superintendent's Superstars but it was cool to find out that I had gotten it."

From super speller to the Superintendent's Superstar. Ananya competes in the national spelling bee in Washington D.C. in late May
