Tonight's superintendent's super star is a Selma senior who is an award winning speaker.

Kevin Garcia recently won the speech competition at the Fresno County academic decathlon.

Supeintendent Jim Yovino said Garcia's, "What is an American" speech came from the heart.

"9-11, Hurricane Katrina, most recently Hurricane Harvey. Americans give a hand. Americans help others. Americans are there for us."

Garcia called his moment in the speech spotlight awesome because there were influential people in the audience.

He was also proud to share the moment with his Mom who raised him.

"When I was small she had two jobs. I barely saw her and it really inspired me to strive for education to keep on going. It showed me the value of hard work and the value of commitment."

Garcia says after graduation he wants to join the Marines. His ultimate goal is to get his doctorate in engineering.
