Five middle school students from Firebaugh like to spend their free time cleaning up beaches, their community and their campus. Their hard work and community service caught the attention of Fresno County Superintendent of Schools Jim Yovino.
The students Krisalynn Turman, Judith Coreas, Alikxa Ramos, Jose Davila and Manuel Bautista are the superintendent's super stars for October. When it comes to cleaning up they can do it all. They have helped with three separate clean-up events for the San Joaquin River in Fresno. They also visited Davenport Beach twice to protect the ocean by reducing the trash near the beach.
Yovino was very impressed. "These kids love their city, love their community. They not only clean up the city but they clean up at school. It's kids like this that will be our next leaders in the future." The students never seem to tire of the projects.
They even raise money by collecting recyclables. Manuel Bautista spoke for the group. "Like river clean-up, beach clean-ups and even clean up our school. Our school is pretty nice but it can do a lot better so we just try to help and all the money we fund raise goes to kids in need."
The students from Firebaugh say they consider it a high honor to be selected super stars by Superintendent Yovino.
