Fresno Police: Man With Knife Shot, Killed By Officer

A man is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Central Fresno. It happened around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday near Belmont and Abby.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer says someone called 911 to report a man with a knife was going up to cars and banging on them.

When police got there, one officer tried to approach the man. That officer says the man came at him with what turned out to be a 12-inch knife.

The officer fired several shots. The man was hit and died at the scene. The coroner's office has identified him as 29-year-old Albert Sanchez.

The officer was not hurt. He has been placed on administrative leave.

The investigation forced road closures in the area, including the on and off ramps to Highway 180. All the roads are now back open.
