Playland Closed For At Least a Year, Major Renovations Needed

A local landmark that opened as an alternative to Disneyland nearly 60 years ago is now closed.

While the online calendar for Rotary Playland shows it's closed for the winter during the month of March, KMPH Fox 26 News has confirmed that Rotary Playland will be closed for the year.

Whether the closure extends beyond that, is still being determined by board members.

"We're using the year to redesign and decide what to do," says Wayne Thomas, a Playland Board Member and Legal Counsel.

Thomas and other board members blame low revenues -- and expensive and necessary repairs.

Renovations on the train alone are around $80,000.

Other attractions also need to be restored or repaired to pass inspection.

This brings the total to more than $100,000.

While board members declined to speak on camera, they say they are planning to meet Tuesday. They plan to release more details about the closureand possibly announce a major fundraising campaignlater in the week.

Right now, Storyland is also closed.

Thomas says the board has already requested bids for repairs there.

Board members hope to re-open Storyland in the Spring, just in time for students to visit.

While both parks are closed, there is security on site.

Board members say they have donated their own money to deter vandals- and keep every last dollar, going to restoration.
