Paul Mitchell, longtime Reedley College announcer passed away
REEDLEY, Calif. (FOX26) —
Sports in Reedley will never sound the same after longtime Reedley sports figure Paul Mitchell passed away after a lengthy illness.
Mitchell served as the Reedley High Baseball coach for 20 years but he spent six decades working behind a microphone.
If you ever attended a Reedley College football or basketball game, you heard his voice and felt his enthusiasm.
Mitchell was the public address announcer for the Tigers for 61 years, until he retired in 2014.
He is survived by his wife, Madeleine, four children, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Serving the Reedley sports community was clearly his passion.
Here is some of what others are saying as they remember Paul Mitchell:
- Reedley College President Dr. Sandra Caldwell: “Mr. Mitchell was an icon on our campus. We are forever indebted to him for his years of service to Reedley College Athletics.”
- Former head basketball coach Brian Fonseca: “He was a great Reedley Tiger, no one was happier when we won. Paul was a father figure to me. He was the Mr. Reedley of sports.”
- Former Fresno City College sports publicist Woody Wilk: "To me, Paul was the most loyal Reedley College fan he ever met. He will be missed.”
- Fresno State play-by-play announcer Paul Loeffler: “Paul definitely had a recognizable voice and an enthusiasm in his voice that made you pay attention.”
Paul Mitchell was 87 years old.
