FNR Playoff Preview: Clovis vs Clovis West

FNR Playoff Preview: Clovis vs Clovis West

This week's Friday Night Rivals game is a true rivalry.

It's a playoff game between Clovis High and Clovis West, live on our sister station, The CW59, at 7:00 p.m.

Clovis High is not new to football, or to great quarterback play.

So when senior QB Payton Mayer broke a school record for touchdown passes in a game, 7 last week against Ridgeview, that's saying something.

Senior tight end Bybba Byrd said, "He was laser focused. Just zoned in. He was hitting all his throws, just best game yet."

Byrd would know, because he had more than 200 yards receiving and two TD's himself.

Then there's defensive back Cristian Loera, who intercepted four passes in that game.

And his 11 interceptions for the season breaks a 47-year-old Cougar record. "He's just got a knack for it. He's just got that natural instinct, and he plays really good man coverage, you know, finds the ball, gets his head around and makes plays. And he's just always in the right spot at the right time, he's just one of those guys, kind of a little magnet," said Byrd.

QB Payton Mayer said, "That to be honest, is a crazy skill. Reading the ball, reading the receiver, reading the quarterback, he just has the gift, I guess."

At Clovis West, Rodney Wright III sure has a gift, or several gifts. The senior has more than 500 yards rushing and 500 yards receiving and 17 combined touchdowns.

Golden Eagles senior linebacker Dusty Schramm said, "It's electric. He's extremely fast, extremely elusive, but he's also a hard-nosed runner, he's not afraid to put his head down and run through someone. He's one of my best friends, and watching him excel on the field, it's just an awesome feeling."

Schramm is about as reliable a tackler as you'll find in the Central Valley. His twin brother DJ is out with an injury, but as long as Clovis West has one of the Schramm's in the game, their defense is tough. "When I watch him - this man is a monster. He's silent, doesn't say much when he's on the field, but he dominates. And he's very physical. I wouldn't want to go against him. Definitely wouldn't want to go against him," said Rodney Wright III.

If you can't make it to the game, you can watch it live on CW59 Friday at 7:00 p.m.
