FNR campus visit: Clovis West vs. Buchanan

The 5-1 Clovis West Golden Eagles take on the 5-1 Buchanan Bears at 7:30 p.m. on the CW59.

Another outstanding high school football game takes place this week for Friday Night Rivals.

The 5-1 Clovis West Golden Eagles take on the 5-1 Buchanan Bears at 7:30 p.m. on the CW59.

FOX26 Sports reporter Nick King introduces us to both head coaches.

Clovis West head football coach George Petrissans has seen a lot of California football, as a player and a coach.

The first memories come as a standout lineman in Los Banos. "When you went to a football game in Los Banos, it always felt like the town was shutting down to go watch the game. Really felt that sense of community," said Coach Petrissans.

Petrissans played at Chico State and St. Mary's, then immediately got into coaching at San Jose State, St. Mary's and Cal on the collegiate level, before 12 years of high school ball in Sacramento and now 4 years with the Golden Eagles. "I love to compete and that's a huge part of it. The biggest thing is I love being around the kids. And talking to players afterwards when they come back and they see you, the impact that you might have had on them as a person, that's always a huge part for me, too," said Coach Petrissans.

There aren't many, if any, Valley high school coaches with a playing resume like Buchanan's Matt Giordano, with 9 seasons in the NFL as a defensive back. "Can't beat winning the Super Bowl. Being on a Super Bowl winning team was a special moment. You know, and also being on a Valley Championship team was a special moment," said Coach Giordano. "That's what I keep telling these kids. These are memories and moments you're going to remember your whole life."

Giordano, now in this second season at his alma mater, says he was blessed to play for and learn from a lot of great coaches at Buchanan, Fresno City College and Cal, but it wasn't until halfway through his pro career that he first thought about coaching. "I was hurt one week, so I offered to help out with breaking down film and kind of formulate a game plan together. Coach Dungy told me, 'hey, whenever you're done, I think you have a good profession coming up.'"

If you can't make it to the game, make sure you watch it at 7:30 p.m. on The CW59.
