Big Screen on a Budget - Ghostbusters

The Ghostbusters Abby (Melissa McCarthy), Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon), Erin (Kristen Wiig) and Patty (Leslie Jones) in Columbia Pictures' GHOSTBUSTERS.

Ghostbusters is the 2016 reboot of a 1984 comedy classic. The new cast includes Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones as the Ghostbusters. Online, this movie has been very controversial. Some disapprove of the casting of this remake, and some just don’t want Ghostbusters remade altogether. But it is all much ado about nothing really.

The new Ghostbusters is harmless fun! I certainly laughed throughout, with the standout performance being Kate McKinnon’s cartoonish Jillian Holtzmann. The movie has some fun scares, some good laughs, pretty eye popping stylized visual effects, and is a fine time at the movies.

Is it better than the original? Not a chance. Is it worth a rental when the movie comes out on Blu Ray? Absolutely! And I do recommend you wait until DVD release to watch this one. You’re just not gaining a lot by going to the theater in this case. But the 2016 reimagining of Ghostbusters is far from terrible, and is worth a watch in a more affordable environment.
