TACOMA, Wash. - A crash involving two logging trucks on Interstate 5 has sent one driver to the hospital with serious injuries, emergency officials said.

State troopers and medics responded to the scene, on northbound I-5 near the Highway 16 interchange, at about 9:45 a.m. Thursday after receiving reports of a serious crash.

Two logging trucks were found at the scene. Logs from one of the trucks crashed through the windshield of the other truck and out the back of the cab, severely injuring the driver of that truck. The driver was taken to the hospital, where he is listed in serious but stable condition.

A preliminary investigation found that the logging truck in front came to an abrupt stop for some unknown reason in a construction zone. The second truck then crashed into the first one, causing logs from the front truck to smash completely through the cab of the second truck, said Trooper Brooke Bova of the Washington State Patrol.

The crash is under investigation.
