Phone scam: Caller poses as Sheriff's Lieutenant
A new scam is targeting the public.
This one, consists of a call coming from a man who identifies himself as a Lieutenant with the Fresno County Sheriff's Office.
The caller, who says he's Lt. Ron Hayes, says there's a business matter that needs to be addressed, and directs the person to call them back at a number of (559) 500-1980.
Once the number is dialed, the caller reaches a generic recording that prompts them to press zero so they can speak with a representative.
They are then told to leave a message with their personal information for a call back.
While there is a Lt. Ron Hayes at the department, the Fresno County Sheriff's office is not associated with the phone number and he is not behind the phone calls.
"Our past experience with scams like these show that the person will often use scare tactics to try and get their target to pay them with cash or gift cards in order to stay out of legal trouble," says a statement from the Fresno County Sheriff's Office.
It emphasizes it never makes solicitations for money or asks for the payment of fines over the phone.
You are urged to document any information, such as the caller’s name or phone number and report it to the law enforcement agency overseeing your jurisdiction.
The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office accommodates online reporting for this type of matter. Please visit here and click on “Report a Crime” located at the top of the page.
