New charter school opens in Visalia

Students helped teachers and staff cut the ribbon to the new Global Learning Charter School on Tuesday.

Children heading back to school in Visalia are now going to have some new classrooms to learn in.

Some of those students helped teachers and staff cut the ribbon to the new Global Learning Charter School on Tuesday.

This is Visalia's first charter school.

The new school will offer classes from kindergarten through 6th grade this year and 7th and 8th grade classes will be added over the next two years.

School officials say this is not going to be a typical elementary school. "We believe that not all students learn in the same ways and time frame. So we want to make sure we are meeting students needs however they come to us," said Principal Karin Aurie.

The school will offer Spanish language classes starting in kindergarten and mixed grade classes.

Principal Aurie says nearly 400 students are expected to enroll for the upcoming school year.
