UPDATE 7/19/2017 7:30 p.m.: The Detwiler Fire is burning 48,000 acres, 7% contained. Over 3,100 firefighters working the scene.

The wildfire in Mariposa County is spreading fast, and firefighters say they are having a hard time slowing it down.

Air attack planes Tuesday night were trying to stop the fire's progress. The Detwiler fire grew to 45,724 acres overnight, and is 7% contained, according to fire officials.

Reinforcements are now being called in to help get the fire under control, bringing the number of firefighters working to more than 2200.

The fire is burning in the hills northwest and northeast of Mariposa. Firefighters are having to battle it on two fronts.

Hundreds of people were evacuated from the town of Mariposa Tuesday morning. 8 structures have been destroyed by the fire so far, and over 1000 homes are threatened.

Families in the area can use the Mariposa County Sheriff's Office text alert system to get information quickly. To sign up, text your zip code to 888-777.

Thousands of homes are without power after PG&E shut it down to keep the area safe for firefighters. The company says that because of probable damage to power lines, homes may stay dark even after the grids turn back on.
