Man swept away by Merced River while trying to rescue 3 year old daughter

A man was swept away by the Merced River while he was trying to save his 3-year-old daughter at Hagaman Park in Stevinson Wednesday around 5:30 p.m.

Merced County Sheriff's Office says Jose Castaneda, his wife, and the toddler were swimming in the river when the current pulled the girl away. The parents and several bystanders were able to save the daughter, but both the father and mother were swept downstream. The mother was found later on the north bank of the river, alive.

Jose Castaneda, the father, has not been found. Search and Rescue teams looked until 9:30 p.m., but the search was called off because of visibility and swift currents. The sheriff's office says the search should continue Thursday.
