Police: Man arrested after injuring officer in hotel lobby

A man was arrested after police say he injured an officer in a hotel lobby.

It happened Tuesday around 2 a.m. at the Best Western Hotel near the Visalia Airport.

According to the Visalia Police Department, officers went to the hotel to check on the welfare of a man who was acting strangely.

Police say the employee was so upset by the man's behavior that he locked the man in the lobby and ran away from the hotel.

The officer then entered the hotel lobby and made contact with 28-year-old Omar Almaguer who was standing in an elevator.

When the officer ask Almaguer to walk outside, he attacked the officer.

Police say the officer fought with Almaguer for several minutes before backup officers arrived.

Police say the officers were forced to use an impact weapon and a taser to stop Almaguer after he attempted to take an officer's gun.

Almaguer was taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated for his injuries sustained during the attack on the officers.

One officer suffered an injury to his hand and was treated at the hospital.
