CLOVIS, Calif. (FOX26) —
Former City Councilman Harry Armstrong has passed away.
He was 87 years old.
He passed away around 6:00 p.m. Thursday.
Armstrong has had a huge impact on the City of Clovis throughout the past three or four decades.
He was a driving factor in the building of Highways 168 and 180, among so many other big infrastructure projects.
Armstrong served on the City Council for 46 years and was elected mayor five times.
He was the only mayor in Clovis history to serve more than two terms.
Fresno City Councilman Luis Chavez posted a tribute to Armstrong on his Facebook page.
"RIP Harry Armstrong.. Clovis is what it is today because of his tenure on the city council.. longest-serving elected official “west of the Mississippi”.. I hope the city of Clovis honors him in a way he deserves.. he’s still the only elected official that has his own flag during Clovis Rodeo days.. “Mr. Clovis”.. his firm handshake was unforgettable," the post reads.
