Fresno County Social Services warns of text message scam

The Fresno County Department of Social Services (DSS) is warning people about a text message scam targeting DSS clients.

Clients and others have reported receiving a text message prompting them to call regarding CalWORKs, a public assistance program that gives cash aid and services to eligible families that have a child(ren) in the home.

DSS says when you call the number, an automated system prompts the person to enter personal information such as EBT card number, PIN, date of birth, and Social Security Number.

These text messages are NOT originating from the Department of Social Services.

If you receive a suspicious text message or phone call, do NOT give out your personal or case information. Instead, contact DSS at 1-855-832-8082.

If you have received one of these messages and provided personal information, it is recommended that you file a report with your local police department in addition to contacting DSS.

Similar scams have been reported from other California counties. Recipients of DSS benefits are urged to be cautious.
