Crooks hit "hundreds" of mailboxes in Madera County neighborhood

Crooks pried open the mailboxes in the Indian Lakes neighborhood sometime Saturday night or early Sunday morning.

Families in the Madera County neighborhood known as Indian Lakes say they are fed up.

“You feel so violated,” says Darlene Housely.

A mailbox at the corner of Delaware and Avenue 417, south of Coarsegold, was hit by crooks sometime Saturday night or early Sunday morning.

“I’d say 90 percent of the homes here are affected,” says Housely, who is part of the Indian Lakes Ladies Auxiliary.

She says they’ve had break-ins in the past, and they were promised a new set of mailboxes.

But those have not been delivered.

“They easily broke in this time. They’re aluminum,” Housely said.

She says this most recent one is one of the worst break-ins.

Word traveled quickly.

“My phone has been ringing off the hook today. People saying, “Hey Darlene! Have you been down the mailboxes? They’ve been broken into again!” Housely said.

She and others are now pleading for those replacement boxes.

Crooks like to target families in the holidays.

“In the holidays it happens a lot and I wouldn’t be surprised if it happens again this year as we get closer to all the packages being delivered, checks being sent by grandparents,” she says. “I think this one was one of the worst here.”

Fox26 was not able to reach the U.S. Postal Service for comment.

We will update this story if there is any development on those replacement mailboxes.
