A K9 officer with the Atwater Police Department is now a little safer thanks to a donation from a nonprofit organization.

K9 Boss received a ballistic vest on Wednesday courtesy of Bill Westbrook, president of the Los Banos K9 Association.

Westbrook started the nonprofit agency after he retired from the Los Banos Police Department where he served as a police officer and a K9 handler for 17 years.

An on-duty injury forced Westbrook into retirement, but it did not stop him from his desire to continue to give back.

Since the organization was created, Westbrook and his organization have raised funds allowing him to donate vests to six other agencies, including Ceres PD, Hollister PD and Newman PD.

K9 Boss' handler Officer Fred Robinson was grateful for the donated vest and accepted it from Westbrook Wednesday morning during a ceremony held in front of the police station.
