Five people are dead following a crash Tuesday morning in west Fresno County.

CHP says an SUV crashed into a big rig at Manning Ave. and Highway 33 around 9:00 a.m.

The vehicle caught fire, which then spread to the big rig.

Fresno County sheriff's deputies were first on the scene and tried to pull the victims from the SUV but were only able to get two out before the fire fully engulfed the vehicle.

CHP says the the vehicle involved is a Mercedes SUV from Hayward, Calif. in the Bay Area.

They say it appears the SUV ran the stop sign and hit the big rig, causing it to overturn.

The driver of the big rig was airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center with major injuries.

Highway 33 was closed north of Manning Ave. for several hours.
