2 arrested, one charged with the murder of a child
CHOWCHILLA, Calif. (FOX26 NEWS) —
The Chowchilla Police Department says a man has been arrested for the murder of a child.
Police say 39-year-old Cornell Jackson contacted police on March 12 to report the possible drowning of a child. However, police say when Cornell was asked about his location so that an ambulance could meet him, it is believed he stopped the car and left the unresponsive child along with two other minors at a Madera gas station.
Once officers arrived it was evident that the child did not drown as reported, the child was the victim of abuse. Police say the child had major injuries which led investigators to believe the child was a victim of a homicide and not an accidental drowning.
Police were able to track down Jackson a short time later and he was arrested for Felony Torture, Felony Murder, Felony Assault of a Child causing Death, and possession of Methamphetamine a misdemeanor.
Jackson's girlfriend, 35-year-old Monica Meza was also arrested for Felony Child Endangerment.
Both Jackson and Meza have been booking into the Mader County Department of Corrections.
The other child in the home was turned over to the Madera County Child Protective Services.
If anyone has information regarding this case they are urged to contact Chowchilla Police Department (559) 665-8600 and speak to Sgt. Denny.
Chief Dave Riviere said, “This is a tragic loss of an innocent child’s life. No one should have to endure the pain this poor child did."
