St. Jude Spotlight: 5-year-old Mason

Leukemia, cancer and a whole host of deadly diseases don’t care if you’re a child.

That’s why the mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to help kids battling life threatening illnesses regardless of their race, religion or a family's ability to pay.

Fox 26 viewers have generously helped it do that in the past and now some very grateful parents want to thank you, like “Mason's” dad, “Matt”.

Five-year-old Mason loves to fish. “It’s been one of the one things he’s latched onto even when he was really sick,” says Masons dad, Matt.

“Last time we went fishing we was racing of catching one didn’t we daddy,” Mason remembered?

“He got a really big carp 12 to 15 pounds,” Matt admitted.

“I caught the first one. yeah I got a big one! He lost and I won.”

“That’s my little boy.”

Then Matt related how the nightmare started. “We had his birthday party every kid’s little dream of a birthday party. He seemed a little distant. Kept coming up sit in my lap. Once he was around several children he looked like a ghost. The day after his party we took him to the doctor where we live. His blood level was so low if we would've waited a couple more days he said more than likely he would've passed in his sleep.”

“When we got here it was overwhelming. Lot of chemotherapy right off the bat. He had a lot of the fevers, stuff like that. complications it pulls your heart out.”

“We were never sent a bill. All they want you to concentrate on is your little one. There's no other place in the world that would've done something like that.”

“Within 5 weeks he hit remission.”

And what does Mason have to say about his ordeal?

“I’m tough now and I’m five. I can pick heavy stuff up now.

How did you get so strong?

“Ha, by eating and everything, the five-year-old laughed. “I can pick up big stuff and go phwet! I can even pick up that thing. I can pick that camera up. I can pick you up, I could pick all of you guys up at the same time. Ha you want me to try?”

But Matt says, he’s just grateful beyond words. “Without St. Jude I wouldn't have my little boy here today and I don’t know where I’d be without him.”

Mason is still in remission, but other parents are now going through the same nightmare with their children and they're hoping you can help again.
