Fresno 3rd grader excels in the classroom and kitchen
FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) —
Jalen Bailey is a Fresno Unified honor roll student who spends his free time in the kitchen. Bailey is only in the third grade but he has his very own bakery. His accomplishments in the classroom and kitchen earned him this month's superintendent's superstar award.
Bailey likes to cook chocolate chip cookies. He's been baking for two years. He knows all too well when the butter isn't room temperature it won't mix that well with the rest of the cookie dough. He pops it in the microwave for thirty seconds and the problem is solved. Bailey was born to cook. "I like doing it first of all and second of all I wanted to buy me and my Mommie a house."
Bailey may rule the kitchen but his Mom Sharhonda Mahan is still in charge. "When he said that about getting a house that's really sweet. It brought tears to my eyes but it's just like let me worry about the house, you save up for college. The third grader is an honor roll student. He knows that homework always comes before fun in the kitchen.
His dedication to learning hasn't gone unnoticed. Fresno County Superintendent of Schools Jim Yovino named Jalen this month's educational superstar. "This kid is going to accomplish a lot of great things you can tell. Wake up every morning with a loving heart. Jalen does that everyday. Jalen decided that he was gonna help out this family to start a baby business and start cooking."
Jalen received his superstar shirt and a certificate. What did he think? "That's pretty cool!"
Time didn't allow us to taste Jalen's chocolate chip cookies. Just like everyone else we'll have to place an order. Here is the link to get you to his website. www.jalensbakery.com
