Farm To Fork: Walnuts

Walnuts are also a great source of omega-3 fatty acid.

Walnuts are growing in popularity as people are discovering the health benefits over grains.

Walnuts are also a great source of omega-3 fatty acid.

In this segment of Farm to Fork, Rich Kreps, a certified crop advisor with Ultra Gro, talks with Jerome Warmerday of Warmerdam Walnut Co. in Hanford.

Jerome has some walnut trees that were planted back in 1962 that are still producing today.

But the trend has moved to walnuts with a lighter colored meat, so many varieties are planted to keep up with changes in the market.

Growing walnuts is just part of the process at Warmerdam Walnut Co.

The nuts are also sorted, dehydrated, packaged and shipped, and then the waste is shredded into compost, which is used in the fields for better nut production.

So the next time you're adding walnuts to your salad, entree or desert, think about your local growers bringing it to your table.
