World War II Vet Beat Up & Robbed By Robbers

A 91-year-old World War II veteran is recovering at home after he was beat and robbed by four armed burglars during a Fresno home invasion.

Fresno County deputies say the attack happened around 1:30 early Wednesday morning at a home near the corner of Willow and Olive, east of Fresno.

Josef Martin says he woke up to a gun in his face.

Martin says, "I feel this guy poking me with a gun on me and all the lights are on. The girl was standing in the corner with a gun on me."

After the crooks got Martin out of bed, they shoved him inside the closet. But not before hitting him with the butt of the gun against his cheek and slamming his head against the floor. They then told him to stay there for 10 minutes before the got away.

Reporter asks, "When you were in the closet what was going through your mind?"

Martin says, "Good Lord help me! I crawled and I said I'm going to crawl to that phone."

He called 9-1-1.

Martin says he wasn't scared. He says he's always been cool under pressure. He was a Corporal in the U.S. Army. Martin says he was involved in four major wars in Europe including 'The Battle of the Bulge' and he stormed the beach at Normandy.

Martin says, "The sky was just full of fire. B-29's they were headed to Berlin to bomb Berlin. Young kids were crying. They didn't want to die. I never got scared I said good Lord that's all."

The crooks got away with $200 in cash, he had hidden under a rug.

They also took a ring, a German prisoner of war made for him as a peace offering.

He says the attack is just anther example of today's society.

Martin says, "It's terrible, Kids are not afraid of dying. Kids tell the teacher what to do. Babies having babies, the society is going down hill. There is no more respect."

The Fresno County Sheriff's Department is investigating the case.
