Swearengin: 'I Believe In Downtown Fresno'

Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin sees promise in downtown Fresno.

Swearengin lauded the Downtown Fresno Partnership for their efforts to revitalize the area and backed the newly launched "I Believe in Downtown" campaign Tuesday morning at the annual State of Downtown breakfast.

"The exciting progress we're seeing in downtown is because property owners said that, even in a down economy, we believe in ourselves, we believe in our city, and we're going to put our money on the table to prove it," Swearengin said.

More than 400 people were said to have attended the two-hour event held inside of the Pacific Southwest Building's Bankers Ballroom.

Revitalization efforts from the partnership and supporters, Swearengin said, produced positive results during 2012, which included an estimated 162,950 attendees for events put on by the partnership in 2012; an increase in foot traffic in roughly two-thirds of all downtown businesses; 31,992 interactions with downtown guests over the last six months of the year; and, an 82 percent increase in the partnership's Facebook fans in the last quarter of the year.

"I urge everyone to join us in believing in downtown," Swearengin said. "When you tell me that you believe in downtown, you are telling me that you believe in your city. It is not possible to believe in Fresno and not believe in downtown."
