Searches In The Sierra: Four Missing Near Huntington Lake
Sierra National Forest —
The Fresno County Sheriff's Office is searching for four women near Lake Italy, approximately 20 miles northeast of Huntington Lake.
Deputies say they received a call shortly after 9 p.m. on Tuesday from one of the women who said she, along with three other women, lost their sense of direction due to thick smoke from the Aspen Creek fire.
Deputies used GPS to locate the woman's cell phone signal on the John Muir Trail between Lake Italy and Bear Creek after losing cell phone service.
Deputies called for a California Highway Patrol helicopter to search for the women. But, thick smoke from the wildfires burning in the area prevented the helicopter from searching the area.
A search and rescue team then began a search for the four women. The search area is more than twenty miles from the Aspen Creek fire, the sheriff's office said.
In another incident, deputies rescued a man who had fallen ill while hiking in the area of Lake Virginia, approximately 10 miles north of Lake Edison in northeastern Fresno County.
The man was with his son when he started to have serious medical problems, the sheriff's office said.
The man was transported by helicopter to a hospital in Mammoth.
