Nutrition Labels Changing - May Be Easier To Understand

For the first time in 20 years nutrition labels could change on food packaging. The Food and Drug administration is making these proposals, which are supported by First Lady Michelle Obama with her healthy eating and "Let's Move!" campaign.

The new labels include changes to the serving size and updates the recommended daily guidelines for various nutrients.

The new rules are being redesigned to make it clearer for us to know how many calories we're getting.

Right now, you'll notice many soda bottles show at least a serving size of 2, but most people don't just drink a half of a bottle of soda - they drink the whole thing. If they are looking at the nutrition label, they may not realize this - in the small print.

So, this proposal suggests serving sizes for a bottle of soda go from 8 to 12 ounces.

The serving size for ice cream will increase from 1/2 cup to 1 cup.

For yogurt, the serving size will be reduced from 8 ounces to 6.

The changes will go into effect two years after they are finalized.
