New Tax: State Lawmakers Mull Sugary Drink Tax

California lawmakers are mulling over a proposal to tax sugary drinks in an effort to curb climbing obesity rates.

The one-cent per fluid ounce tax would apply to sweetened drinks like soda and energy drinks.

The measure, introduced by State Sen. Bill Monning, D-Carmel, cleared a tax committee on Wednesday. Proponents of the measure said that it would raise more than $1 billion in revenue within the first year.
