New Law Requires Teachers To Report Child Abuse To CPS

Teachers in California will now be required to report child abuse, not just to administrators, but to child protective services as well.

Governor Jerry Brown signed the bill into law on Wednesday.

The new law states that teachers applying for, or renewing their credentials, will be required to acknowledge their responsibility to report suspected child abuse to law enforcement, or county welfare officials.

The bill comes in response to several troubling cases involving child abuse in schools.

One particular case out of the Bay Area shows teachers reported suspected abuse to a principal, but that the information was never relayed to law enforcement.
